The partners located one of their branches in Fort Worth, where they operated stockyards and sought buyers for clients' stock. In the wake of the decline of the cattle industry in the late 1880s, Hunter sold his interest in the company to Evans and directed his attention to coal prospects in Texas. 11 Hunter's exact role in the Johnsons' two-year effort to mine coal is unclear. In November, 1886, Edgar L. Marston, a New York financier, Hunter's son-in-law, and a future major stockholder and officer in the Texas & Pacific Coal Company, received a copy of the assay report performed for the Johnsons on the coal reserves that the brothers had purchased the previous month.

He resorted to hiring people from nearby farms to build houses, clear streets, paint, haul rock, build water tanks, improve the mine shafts and guard them, build a wire fence around the mining property, and load dirt. The company's time book listed 127 employees in December, 1988, including 25 with Spanish surnames and 2 among them designated as interpreters. By the following February, the total number of employees had grown to 173, and much more of their labor centered around the two mine shafts.
